Is it any easier when your partner on ice is your partner in life?

Article content“It’s tough either way,” said Brett Gallant after he and wife Jocelyn Peterman’s Olympics ended with a 9-5 loss to South Korea at Cortina Olympic Curling Stadium.

“We’ve been through it all together, we’ve been through some ups, we’ve been through some downs,” he said. “We’re gonna be here to support each other, but this one’s gonna hurt for a little while.”

That win ended the Italians’ streak of 23 victories in Olympic and world championship play in front of a hometown crowd.

Then the wins dried up. Snoop Dogg showed up to the duo’s game against Team USA, which the Canadians lost 7-5. Gallant and Peterman struggled to adapt the next day when ice makers delivered faster, straighter sheets for their early game against Great Britain, which remained an issue for them the rest of the tournament.

“Without that curl we struggled, that’s just a fact,” Gallant said.

The walls continued to close in with a 7-6 loss to Sweden on Sunday afternoon. Estonia, making the most of their Olympic debut, delivered an 8-6 upset later that day.

Coach Scott Pfeifer said the tournament was one of the deepest in mixed doubles history.

“There’s eight teams here that are world championship medallists,” he said. “This is easily the most in-depth field that we had here. Every single game out there was a grind, and sometimes you’re on the right side of the inch and sometimes you’re on the wrong side of the inch.”

After their initial success, “we never got going again,” he said. “It wasn’t for a lack of effort. They tried their hearts out.”

Gallant and Peterman, who married in 2022 after years playing mixed doubles, finish their tournament against Switzerland Monday morning. For Peterman, it means moving out of the athletes village, where Gallant will remain while he competes with Team Brad Jacobs. Peterman said she’ll remain in Cortina with family, including their son, to cheer on her husband.

Gallant said a hug from their son will be the best comfort.

“Thinking about this game is going to hurt for a little while. Just reset, take our minds off it. We still have one more game and we want to finish off with a win.”

“We love each other, we’ve been through the highs and the lows together before, and we’re going to support each other.”
