THE Municipality of Chegutu has started mass seizure of dogs found roaming the streets.
In a public notice published recently, the local authority said it has partnered the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) on the joint operation, which started this week.
?Notice is hereby given that the Municipality of Chegutu, in a joint operation with the SPCA and Veterinary Services will commence a mass impoundment of all stray dogs within the municipal area. This operation will begin on Monday, 2 February 2026,? reads the notice.
?This action has been necessitated by a significant increase in reported dog bites from untraceable animals, coupled with the general nuisance and threat to public safety and hygiene caused by stray dogs.
?You are hereby advised as follows:
1. SECURE YOUR PETS: All dog owners must ensure their dogs are properly confined to their premises and are not left to roam freely.
2. IF YOUR DOG IS MISSING: If your dog is missing and is suspected to have been impounded, you must immediately follow up and reclaim the animal at the Chegutu Municipal Offices within seven (7) days of its impoundment.
3. CONSEQUENCES OF NON-CLAIM: Failure to claim your dog within the stipulated seven-day period will result in full ownership and custody of the animal being transferred to the SPCA. The SPCA will thereafter assume all responsibility for the welfare and disposition of unclaimed animals in accordance with its policies.?
Council appealed for the cooperation of all stakeholders in this essential exercise to ensure a safer environment for all residents.
