MILAN, Feb. 10 (Yonhap) -- In-form snowboarder Choi Gaon will begin her medal quest in the women's halfpipe event with the qualification round at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics scheduled for Wednesday.

Choi and the rest of the field will take two runs each at Livigno Snow Park in Livigno, some 230 kilometers north of Milan, starting at 10:30 a.m. The top 12 boarders will advance to Thursday's final, where the athletes will each have three runs.

Choi, 17, is considered South Korea's best gold medal hope in snowboard here. She won three halfpipe titles during the International Ski and Snowboard Federation World Cup season, including one in January.

Choi will be up against two-time defending champion Chloe Kim, the Korean American superstar. Kim will try to become the first snowboarder to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals, but she has been sidelined since mid-January with a torn labrum in her shoulder. Kim has said she'd be good to go at the Olympics, and it will bear watching what she will have up her sleeve in her historic pursuit.

Other events for South Korean athletes on Wednesday include the men's 1,000 meters in speed skating, and the qualification and the final in the women's freestyle skiing monguls.
