'All talk, no action', residents tell Moran on flooding

Residents in flood affected areas of Passage East in Co Waterford have told the Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works that the response to flooding in the area has been "all talk and no action".

Kevin 'Boxer' Moran came to the community of around 350 people at the request of Government Chief Whip Mary Butler.

Mr Moran said the Office of Public Works would fund a programme of individual protection plans to provide flood barriers and other measures for people's homes.

Around two dozen homes were flooded in Brookside and at Post Office Square, after a local river overflowed.

Brookside resident Ann Moran told the minister residents have been "going through it for 50 years."

The minister acknowledged she had gone through a hard time dealing with the flooding, after she had said the response had been "all talk and no action".

At a public meeting in the community centre this morning, local people complained about the lack of advance warning and the response to the flooding.

Waterford City and County Council Chief Executive Sean McKeown said a range of interim and long-term measures have been identified to deal with the flooding threat.

Mr Moran said he would approve individual protection plans to pay for and deliver flood barriers to affected homes.

It comes as Met Éireann is forecasting further rain in parts of the south and east today.

As efforts to clean up following last week's flooding continue today, heavy showers are forecast in parts of the south and east of the country - areas that were the hardest hit by Storm Chandra.

Last night, a public meeting in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, heard calls for a flood-relief plan for the town to be agreed and fast-tracked, and for interim flood-relief measures to be taken immediately.

Around 50 people attended the meeting, at the IFA Centre in Enniscorthy.

Dozens of homes and businesses in Enniscorthy have been flooded over the past fortnight.

Wexford County Council said it has begun implementing interim flood alleviation works in Enniscorthy town centre, including the use of aqua dams which will be mobilised in times of high alert.
