Angela Diffley is pleased to welcome Dr. Sam Martin, Political Communication Scholar at Boise University. As a scholar of conservative movements, she is deeply concerned with how power obscures harm. In the Epstein case, what unsettles her most, in addition to the horrific abuse itself, is the way media and political systems pivot our attention away from the victims and toward the elites, namely powerful men, who may be embarrassed, implicated or exposed. The scandal becomes not about what happened to these girls, but about which elite might get named.
