The employees of Angoche Municipal Council, in the northern Mozambican province of Nampula, have decided to resume activities in all sectors, thus ending their strike in pursuit of six months wages, which they claim are in arrears.
The strikers, who are also demanding the payment of the traditional end-of-year bonus, known as “the 13th month”, decided to resume activities after accepting a proposal presented by the Governor of Nampula province, Eduardo Abdula.
According to the employees, cited in Monday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, work was resumed upon payment of two months of the wage arrears.
This proposal had previously been rejected by the employees, who considered the amount too low for their needs.
This is not the first time Angoche has experienced a crisis as result of delays in wage payments. Over the last year, the workers threatened to paralyze activities as result of irregularities in wage payment based on the Single Wage Table (TSU), which has been in force for the public administration since 2023.
