Macron warns Europe faces political and economic crisis

DW Germany 09:41 AM UTC Tue February 10, 2026 Politics

Speaking to several newspapers ahead of a European Union (EU) leaders meeting on Thursday, the French president said the bloc risks being "swept aside" in the face of competition from the United States and China.

"We have the Chinese tsunami on the trade front, and we have minute-by-minute instability on the American side. These two crises amount to a profound shock, a rupture for Europeans," he said.

Macron said he would urge EU leaders to seize what he called "the Greenland moment," a wake-up call about external threats, to finally push through economic reforms and cut reliance on the US and China.

Macron said the EU should not be lured into a false sense of security because of a lull in tensions with the US after recent clashes over Greenland, technology and trade.

"There are threats and intimidation. And then, suddenly, Washington backs down. And we think it's over. But don't believe it for a second. Every day, there are threats against pharmaceuticals, digital technology…" he said.

He specifically warned of potential US import tariffs from President Donald Trump should the EU use its Digital Services Act to control tech companies.

"When there is blatant aggression… we must not bow down or try to reach a settlement," he said, adding "We tried this strategy for months, and it's not working. But above all, it strategically leads Europe to increase its dependence."

Thursday's summit will discuss France's proposal for a "Made in Europe" strategy that would require minimum levels of European-made content in locally produced goods.

The plan has divided EU countries and worried carmakers, with Germany, Italy and Nordic countries saying strict European-only rules could scare off investment.

"For me, the economic strategy to make our Europe a power lies in what I call protection, which is not protectionism, but rather European preference," Macron said.
