googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('footerleaderboard'); }); The chairperson of Parliament?s Ad Hoc committee looking into concerns around national security, Soviet Lekganyane, says they have assured their next witness, Paul O?Sullivan, that the strictest security arrangements will be upheld during his appearance before the committee.
The committee is probing allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference in the criminal justice system.
O?Sullivan, a private investigator, initially insisted on appearing virtually before the committee, citing a fear for his life.
His appearance has now been confirmed for Tuesday.
After some MPs called for him to be summonsed, Speaker Thoko Didiza called for further consultations to take place.
Lekganyane says O?Sullivan was assured of strict security arrangements.
ANC Chief Whip, Mdumiseni Ntuli, expressed relief that the matter has been resolved without the necessity to get a summons.
?The fact that a solution has been found without subjecting Parliament to what was potentially going to be a huge litigation because it was clear that if he doesn?t cooperate, we?ll subpoena him. All that needed to be done is to do that subpoena in a correct way. We had the possibility to end in the court of law and that has been evaded or avoided. I think this is quite commendable on your leadership as our chairperson and with whatever guidance and advice that the Office of the speaker and the speaker herself provided in the process.?
Parties like the MKP and EFF wanted a summons to be issued to O?Sullivan.
EFF leader, Julius Malema, says the committee did not get assistance from the Speaker?s Office to facilitate O?Sullivan?s appearance.
?It is disingenuous to even want to include the Speaker amongst the people who must be congratulated after her attempt to want to shield Paul O Sullivan. In between her letter and the appearance of Paul O?Sullivan, nothing significantly happened which came from the speaker?s office. Absolutely nothing.?
MK Party MP Sibonelo Nomvalo also expressed the party?s view on O?Sullivan?s appearance.
?The progressive members of this committee went out to denounce O’Sullivan and tactics of wanting to avoid to appear before this committee. If not for that, O’Sullivan would still be displaying his arrogance here. Members of this committee went out to denounce him and his tactics of wanting to avoid to appear before this committee.?
Meanwhile, the committee will approach the speaker?s office for a third extension.
