Geza was not well, not thinking properly ? Zanu PF spokesperson says war veterans will push for liberation war status

ZANU PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa has blamed late liberation war veteran Blessed Geza?s fight against President Emmerson Mnangagwa on his waning health and declared they will push that he gets hero status for his role in Zimbabwe?s war of independence.

Geza, who died last week while in hiding in South Africa, broke rank last year and demanded the immediate resignation of Mnangagwa, whom he blamed for harbouring corrupt businessmen who he claimed had now captured government and Zanu PF.

He publicly backed Vice President Constantino Chiwenga in Zanu PF?s never-ending succession plots, forced two nationwide shutdowns and went into hiding as state security agents hunted him down.

In exile, he broadcast on YouTube, calling on ?fellow Zimbabweans? to stand up against Mnangagwa?s government and fingering Zvigananda in Zimbabwe?s poor economic performance.

He passed on February 6, 2026.

Speaking to The Daily News, Mutsvangwa not only blamed Geza?s health condition for the decision to stand up to Mnangagwa but also what he termed ?remnants of G40,? a once powerful Zanu PF faction in the days of late President Robert Mugabe, whose members are now in exile, scattered across the region.

“Both the party and war veterans feel that he is a comrade who faltered at the last mile. We blame this on the fact that Geza was no longer well,” Mutsvangwa said.

“He was thus not thinking properly, which made him vulnerable to people who want to steal the history of the people of Zimbabwe.

“We embrace him back. As Zanu PF and war veterans, we say your history will not change despite what happened recently.

?He deserves a decent burial and war veterans will push for him to retain his national liberation war status. It cannot be taken away from him.?

Geza?s whereabouts were unknown until his passing. Rumours that he was being protected by the army were never substantiated.

The army is believed to be in full support of Chiwenga?s takeover, which, up until the rise of businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei, seemed obvious.

Added Mutsvangwa: “They wanted to steal him from fellow comrades. It’s theft of history, and Zanu is totally against theft of history.

“Why couldn?t the G40s and other such groups identify anybody else whom they could make a deal with and abuse? Why go for somebody who fought a liberation war?”

Details of his burial are yet to be made public.
