Att?ls ilustrat?vsLETA, Gatis Diezi?š Yesterday, 10:06 Weather Authors: LSM English (Latvian Public Media) The deepest snow in Latvia remains in the southern part of Latgale, where the ground is covered with a layer of snow up to 46 centimeters high, according to data from the Latvian Center for Environment, Geology and Meteorology (LVĢMC). This week, the snow depth in Dagda increased from 40 to 47 centimeters. This is the deepest snow in the country since March 2023.
The second thickest snow cover at the state observation stations is 41 centimeters in Piedruja, Kr?slava region. The Daugavpils observation station measured a 35-centimeter layer of snow, while the ground is covered with 30 and 32 centimeters of snow in R?zekne and L?v?ni regions, respectively.
At other observation stations, the snow depth ranges from six centimeters in Daugavgr?va and M?rsrags to 28 centimeters in Rucava. At the observation station in the center of R?ga, a 16-centimeter-thick snow cover remains.
At the observation stations of the LV?MC, snow cover is measured by an ultrasonic sensor in a specially prepared area, so the average snow thickness in the area may differ significantly from that measured at the observation station.
Sunday will be variable in cloud cover and will pass without significant precipitation. A slow to moderate northeasterly to easterly wind will continue to blow. The air temperature will be within -5 Celsius to -10 C, but in coastal areas it will be a couple of degrees warmer. The day in R?ga will be dry and partly cloudy.
According to current forecasts, a thaw and snow melt are possible from February 12th, but the snow cover may become thicker in the second half of February.
