With the opening of the large-scale Harry Potter experience world, Szentendre has gained a new visitor attraction that exceeded all expectations even before its launch. According to the organisers, more than 42,500 tickets were sold in advance prior to opening — a new Hungarian record for a themed exhibition. By comparison, previous crowd-pullers such as the Titanic or Bodies exhibitions recorded significantly lower advance sales.
The exhibition, whose construction required six months of preparation and the transport of installations by around 70 lorries, guides visitors through some twenty themed rooms. Original costumes, props and rare first editions from the Harry Potter universe are combined with interactive elements that allow visitors to step into the role of Hogwarts students themselves. Using electronic wristbands, guests can complete tasks, collect house points and create personalised “magic profiles”.
In addition to iconic film costumes — from Harry Potter to Voldemort — highlights include meticulously reconstructed locations such as the Great Hall, classrooms and the Ministry of Magic. Mandrake experiments, Quidditch stations and photo points turn the exhibition into a hybrid experience that blends a traditional exhibition with an immersive themed environment.
In response to the strong demand, the organisers have arranged additional shuttle buses to the exhibition site, which is located outside the town centre. Over the coming months, they expect several hundred thousand visitors, making the Harry Potter exhibition not only a must-see for fans but also a new magnet for cultural and leisure tourism in the region.
