Gulbenes novadsLTV Today, 8:55 Transport Authors: Anda Asere, Labs of Latvia From the start of the year, modern methods are being used in the city of Gulbene to improve traffic infrastructure. Smart traffic monitoring devices developed by LMT have been installed at two intersections, where they will operate in test mode for three months, reports Labs of Latvia. A smart traffic monitoring system has been installed at the intersection of Vidus Street and Br?v?bas Street to record pedestrian flow and ascertain whether a signal-controlled pedestrian crossing should be installed there, or, conversely, whether an existing pedestrian crossing should be removed.
Meanwhile, at the intersection of Balo?u Street and Br?v?bas Street, the system will collect statistics on the number of drivers making left turns from Balo?u Street onto Br?v?bas Street and from Br?v?bas Street onto Balo?u Street.
"Every city is responsible for providing a modern, convenient, and safe environment for residents. We are delighted that in partnership with the LMT Group, we can take a step closer to achieving this objective and make daily life more convenient for the residents of Gulbene," said Gulbene Municipality Council Chairman Normunds Maz?rs.
LMT's smart traffic monitoring solution is based on a GDPR-compliant video system equipped with machine vision and AI algorithms. The smart devices help to detect violations such as jaywalking, misuse of public transport lanes, unauthorised stopping at intersections, and failure to comply with traffic light auxiliary signals. They also count vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle flows and perform other traffic monitoring tasks. The solution is comprised of a specially configured mini-computer with computer vision algorithms, high-resolution video cameras, network equipment, mounting hardware, and software developed by the LMT Group.
The first city in Latvia to adopt LMT's smart traffic monitoring solution was Liep?ja. Data from February 2022 and February 2023 confirmed that the smart traffic control device equipped with LMT's machine vision solution helped to cut the number of traffic violations in Liep?ja approximately fivefold.
These traffic lights have also been in operation in J?rmala since the summer of 2024. In Liep?ja and J?rmala, these traffic lights have been officially integrated into the traffic monitoring system. Information recorded about drivers who cross intersections at red lights is forwarded to the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) and municipal police, who then decide on violations and applicable penalties.
Smart traffic lights have also been installed at two intersections in Daugavpils.
With a view to improving traffic safety in the capital, LMT won a public tender in 2025 authorising it to install 26 traffic monitoring devices in Riga. The first devices have been installed at the intersection of Augusta Deglava Street and Il?kstes Street, as well as at the intersections of Br?v?bas Street with Kr. Barona Street and C?su Street. These devices can perform various functions such as recognising and classifying objects, determining their trajectories and positions, recognising and reading vehicle license plates, and identifying traffic light signals. Recorded information on vehicles that violate traffic rules is forwarded to the CSDD and municipal police, whose responsibility it is to determine violations and penalties.
LMT smart traffic monitoring devices have also been installed in the Austrian city of Graz, as reported a couple of years ago.
